BitPim and syncing my LG VX8100 on Mac OS X 10.4
My new LG VX 8100 Celluar PhoneWhen I recently purchased my new cell phone, a LG VX8100, I was excited to get a “next generation” blue tooth phone to use with my Apple Mac 17″ G4 PowerBook. My previous bluetooth phone, a Sprint PCS LG PM325, truly sucked. (Note to Sprint/Nextel: I still have not received my $150 rebate after 12 months and 3 phone calls to customer support.. You guys officially suck! grrrrr)
I have found that the new version of BitPim (0.8.06 - Development Release) seems to be more stable than past versions. You will need to download and install BitPim first.
After you copy BitPim to your Applications Folder , double click to launch the application.
Configure BitPim
The “Auto Detect” serial port option did not work for me, and I had to manually “Browse” and find my phone. Be sure to have the phone connected and paired with your computer before trying to get BitPim working! You can find the Bluetooth name of your phone in your phone’s settings. On your phone, click MENU>SETTINGS & TOOLS>Bluetooth>My Bluetooth Name. This will show you your phones name, and also allow you to edit it.
Get Data From Phone
Once you have your serial port configured, you can now upload and download data to your phone. You can do so by selecting BitPim>Data>(Get Phone Data) or (Send Phone Data). I populated my BitPim with all the data from my phone.
Importing iCal .ics files
Now, lets import a copy of my latest iCal information. I did this by using the File>Export options to export a .ics file to my Desktop of the pertinent calendar. Once I had my iCal info as a .ics file on my desktop, I used the BitPim import feature to load the information. Once it was in, use the BitPim>Data>Send Data to Phone to upload the newly updated information to your VX 8100.
Custom Ringtones
The ringtone feature works well, and can import mp3’s directly. You can select parts of whatever song from your iTunes Library (Music/iTunes Library/*) and upload it to your phone, all for free. Very cool and almost worth the price of admission on it’s own.
Conclusion
Now you can always have your latest iCal info with you, custom Ringtones at no cost, a fully groomed contact list and call/SMS history on your desktop. I highly suggest keeping up to date on your version of BitPim, as they seem to roll out new features and better stability almost weekly. Good luck!

Over on the right, you see a Check Spelling selection in a drop down menu. This is what I see when I right-click (Control-click for Mac users) a text area or form field from within my Firefox browser.

Finding Firefox Extensions
Typically, the easiest way to find the latest extensions for Firefox is to use the Extension Tool from the FireFox Top Menu. When you select Tools>Extensions and you will see something like this:
However, I will save you this step for now and give you a direct link. However, in the future, I highly recommend browsing the extensions available. Some of them can be extremely valuable!
Go directly to the installation page for the Spell Checker Firefox Extension and follow the directions for installation of the Spell Checker extension on your platform.
Important: When you attempt to install any extension, you will be greeted by a screen like the following one. Simply click Install Now.
Restart Firefox
After you install the Extension, you will need to completely restart your FireFox browser. This means going to the top menu and selecting Quit Firefox, waiting for the program to completely exit, then restart Firefox. This will reload any extensions you may have installed.
You’re done!
After you restart your browser, load a page that has a form with a text entry area. Type some text into the form textarea, then Right-click (Control-click) and you should see something like the first screen shot in this entry.
Go ahead and select Check Spelling and you will see something like this screen shot.
From this screen, you can Replace or Ignore and even teach your dictionary new words that may be specific to your industry or habits.
