Sponges in the microwave

I have microwaved my moist sponges for 10-15 seconds to kill bacteria before using them for many years. However, according to the most recent study, it takes 2 minutes at full power to kill all bacteria.
One important detail, which apparently was missing from the initial report, was that the sponge had to be wet. Oops…
How about you? Do you microwave your sponges before or after use in the kitchen?
Microwave experiments cause sponge disasters - CNN.com:
The university issued the following advisory: “To guard against the risk of fire, people who wish to sterilize their sponges at home must ensure the sponge is completely wet. Two minutes of microwaving is sufficient for most sterilization. Sponges should also have no metallic content. Last, people should be careful when removing the sponge from the microwave as it will be hot.”
Right….hot.. After 2 minutes in a microwave at full power, the sponge may be hot.. Do ya think?
