BitPim and syncing my LG VX8100 on Mac OS X 10.4
My new LG VX 8100 Celluar PhoneWhen I recently purchased my new cell phone, a LG VX8100, I was excited to get a “next generation” blue tooth phone to use with my Apple Mac 17″ G4 PowerBook. My previous bluetooth phone, a Sprint PCS LG PM325, truly sucked. (Note to Sprint/Nextel: I still have not received my $150 rebate after 12 months and 3 phone calls to customer support.. You guys officially suck! grrrrr)
I have found that the new version of BitPim (0.8.06 - Development Release) seems to be more stable than past versions. You will need to download and install BitPim first.
After you copy BitPim to your Applications Folder , double click to launch the application.
Configure BitPim
The “Auto Detect” serial port option did not work for me, and I had to manually “Browse” and find my phone. Be sure to have the phone connected and paired with your computer before trying to get BitPim working! You can find the Bluetooth name of your phone in your phone’s settings. On your phone, click MENU>SETTINGS & TOOLS>Bluetooth>My Bluetooth Name. This will show you your phones name, and also allow you to edit it.
Get Data From Phone
Once you have your serial port configured, you can now upload and download data to your phone. You can do so by selecting BitPim>Data>(Get Phone Data) or (Send Phone Data). I populated my BitPim with all the data from my phone.
Importing iCal .ics files
Now, lets import a copy of my latest iCal information. I did this by using the File>Export options to export a .ics file to my Desktop of the pertinent calendar. Once I had my iCal info as a .ics file on my desktop, I used the BitPim import feature to load the information. Once it was in, use the BitPim>Data>Send Data to Phone to upload the newly updated information to your VX 8100.
Custom Ringtones
The ringtone feature works well, and can import mp3’s directly. You can select parts of whatever song from your iTunes Library (Music/iTunes Library/*) and upload it to your phone, all for free. Very cool and almost worth the price of admission on it’s own.
Conclusion
Now you can always have your latest iCal info with you, custom Ringtones at no cost, a fully groomed contact list and call/SMS history on your desktop. I highly suggest keeping up to date on your version of BitPim, as they seem to roll out new features and better stability almost weekly. Good luck!

I can say that the Apple PowerBooks cases were vastly superior to ANY Dell I have ever seen.?? Dell's still feel like cheap, plastic crap….? While I can't speak for the new MacBook case, I imagine that has not changed.

Sadly, it appears that it will NOT dual-boot into Windows XP & OS X.? However, I hold out hope for dual-boot Vista/OS X.?? Turns out, Windows doens't support the new standard for BIOS loading that Apple has implemented.. Thus, the MacBook Pro initially locks out all version of Windows.? Kinda sad, no?

This exploit affects *ALL* versions of Microsoft Windows, including 95, 98, ME, XP, 2000 & 2003.? If you run Enterprise servers, take notice…? If you have a home Windows machine, you should download the temporary WMF patch and install it for now.? When Microsoft releases fixes, which may take weeks or months, you can simply remove this fix.
Until then, know this.. This will be all OVER the news in the coming weeks as it spreads..and it will..? This is a HUGE exploit and will linger for months as older machines probably aren't patched as they should be…?? If you take the time to install this patch, it may pass you by…
